Book Review: A Monster Calls

A Monster CallsA Monster Calls by Patrick Ness
My rating: 4.5 of 5 stars

4.5/5 Absolutely heart wrenching and breathtaking at the same time. A new favorite.

This story burrowed deep into my soul and found its home there.

Once I started the first page and couldn’t put it down. Patrick Ness’ writing was so intricately beautiful that I couldn’t help but revel in every word on the page. The illustrations (done by Jim Kay) added the perfect feel to the book that I felt it was a masterpiece: so much so that I actually didn’t want to write on my copy (which is saying a lot). I cannot thank Siobhan Dowd enough for creating such a beautiful skeleton of a story to allow Ness to create such an alluring tale.

Some of my favorite parts included the themes of stories being alive and wild. I will not spoil the story for you for I think that it is short enough and so bewitching that no one would be able to find a reason not to read it.

In the end I felt like there was a little Conor in all of us. We all have a monster that calls. And I am being entirely honest when I say that my own tears covered the last page as I closed the book.
